Employer Services – How can we help you? – campaign

February 16, 2010 By Owen Jones Leave a Comment

The videos below are from North Coast TAFE “How can we help you?” TVC ad campaign that is currently airing on commercial channels in the Mid and North Coast regions. This campaign is designed to showcase how we’ve help our business customers. My role in this project was limited to processing and publishing the finished TVCs for online.

Our Marketing department invested some serious $$$ to have the TVCs made for television by an advertising company. As is often the case, they then turned to me just as the campaign was launched and said “can we put these on the website” ASAP? So about a days work later, using the Adobe Premier and Media Encoder, I had the ad info for broadcast trimmed off the front and a nice white matte with the campaign logo in its place, processed into FLV format and published in a mrss.xml playlist with .jpg thumbnails for the JW Player to digest. Of course, as we now have two sites (old and new) the publishing had to be duplicated on both but it wasn’t that hard.

I really like the look of the adds, they did a great job. Feel free to use the viral feature in the player, the grey rectangle with the black arrow top left, to get the embed source and share them around. That’s how I got them to my blog. Check them out in-situ on the NCTAFE website.

UPDATE: 09/03/10 I’ve just processed and uploaded F4V versions which provides YouTube/Vimeo level quality. I had to get the server MIMETYPES updated to handle this MP4 format. Worth the improvement. You can see that the video quality is now better than the thumbnail and still images which were taken from the older FLV format files. Slightly larger file size but very noticable improvement when viewing full screen.

UPDATE:  10/03/10  I can’t help making improvements. I’ve now configured the player to load one of three versions of each video depending on the bandwidth available on your internet connection. So if you’re on a slow connection you should get the “small” version approx 1.8MB, if you have a fast connection and you view at full screen you should get the “large” version approx 6MB and higher quality. This required processing with the Adobe Media Encoder and configuration of the mrss.xml file. Enjoy!

UPDATE:  27/05/10 Oops, sorry to those who have tried to view these over the last three weeks. After the launch of the new site we applied a 404 redirect and blocked access to the old site. The files I pointed to here were on the old site. Fixed now. I’ve also enabled the viral plugin.

UPDATE:  20/07/10 Enabled the new JWPlayer Twitter and Facebook plugins so you can now share these via social media.

UPDATE:  25/03/2011 Hadn’t updated this at the time but before I left North Coast TAFE (NCTAFE) I changed the whole setup up to a YouTube embed pointing to a playlist on the NCTAFE YouTube Channel. See in action on the NCTAFE website here
